Our Story
The Beginning
Hunted+Gathered was founded by brothers Charlie and Harry Nissen in Melbourne in 2012. What began as an attempt to make better chocolate for themselves became a pursuit of purity, to understand every stage from bean to bar. Production started in 2014 at the factory at 68 Gwynne Street, Cremorne, where every bar is still made today.
Early Days
They started in a small garage with little more than a spice grinder and curiosity. When the right equipment didn't exist, they built their own, including a winnower to separate cacao nibs from their shells. The goal was not to build a brand. It was to make chocolate that tasted as it should.
The Philosophy
Their approach has remained consistent. Most dark chocolate bars contain three ingredients: organic cacao beans, organic cacao butter, and organic coconut sugar. Milk bars and spreads use sunflower lecithin. Cacao is sourced single-origin from Zorzal Cacao in the Dominican Republic, Kokoa Kamili in Tanzania, and Makira Gold in the Solomon Islands.
Zorzal Cacao is the world's first bird-friendly certified cacao farm and holds Fair for Life certification. Hunted+Gathered is certified organic through ACO.
